I recently had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala, a country whose beauty and diversity are surpassed only by the beauty and diversity of the folks who live there. The experience was life changing.
I recommend some of the many museums in Guatemala City, like the Museo Popal Vue and the Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena where you can view Mayan textiles, archeology, and art. I enjoyed wandering around the beautiful parks and bustling markets and ate the best Cubano sandwich I’ve ever had at Comma, “Sandwich Social Club.”
Visit Antigua to see beautiful colonial spanish architecture, churches, and marketplaces where the local artists and craftspeople sell their handmade goods. There was a variety of different eateries, bars, and shops all within walking distance of our beautiful Hotel Mestizo. The Chocomuseo was a personal favorite because I was able to purchase beautiful jade earrings and tasty chocolate in the same place.
Lake Atitlan is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. The sun rises above the caldera, and Volcan Atitlan, Volcan Toliman, and Volcan San Pedro are aglow as the boat taxis start for the day. I wasn’t able to visit all the villages around the lake, but I took a Tuk Tuk to San Marcos La Laguna and spent some time looking at handmade textiles and jewelery. I was fortunate enough to stay at Anzan, an artist retreat on the water, with a beautiful garden and stunning view. It is paradise, as inspirational as the owner.
I didn’t want to leave but I did. I can see the waves of Atitlan on the back of my eye lids and I dream of fire. I will return.
